জন্ম স্থান- ভারতের বর্তমান পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুর্শিদাবাদের তালিবপুর গ্রামে।
বাবার নাম : মোহাম্মদ ইউসুফ আলী।
মায়ের নাম : খাসা বিবি।
মাত্র ১৩ বছর বয়সে ১৯৪৩ সালে তার গানের প্রথম রেকর্ড বের হয়। রেকর্ডকৃত গান দুটি হলো 'তোর মোস্তফাকে দে না মাগো' এবং 'আফতাব আলী বসলো পথে'। কলকাতায় আলিয়া মাদ্রাসায় গান গাওয়ার সময় থেকে তিনি সাফল্য অর্জন করতে থাকেন। সে সময় লাহোরে অনুষ্ঠিত অল পাকিস্তান সংগীত সম্মেলনে তিনি পাঁচটি স্বর্ণপদক লাভ করেন।

ওফাত দিবস - ১৯৭৪ সালের ৫ সেপ্টেম্বর।
মাত্র ৪৪ বছর বয়সে তৎকালীন ঢাকার পিজি হাসপাতালে (বর্তমানে বঙ্গবন্ধু শেখ মুজিব মেডিক্যাল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) মৃত্যুবরণ করেন তিনি।
আধ্যাত্মিক ও মরমী মুর্শিদী গানের জন্য তিনি অমর হয়ে থাকবেন চিরকাল মানুষের হৃদয়ে।
