At the center of the Ophiuchus galaxy cluster, there is a supermassive black hole sitting inside a large galaxy.
This black hole caused the explosion, blasting out powerful jets that carved a cavity in the surrounding hot gas.
Using data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Telescope, XMM-Newton, and two radio telescopes, astronomers calculated how much energy was released.
They found this explosion let loose a factor of five more energy than the previous record holder.
The Ophiuchus and other galaxy clusters can help scientists learn more about how supermassive black holes interact with and influence their environment.
