The Herald Sun’s James Campbell says the outbreak of COVID-19, otherwise known as coronavirus, is “going to overwhelm us very quickly if what is happening overseas is replicated here”. The number of confirmed cases of the virus has passed 100,000 world-wide with more than 3,500 dead.
Northern Italy is in lockdown, with the European nation recorded the highest amount of cases outside China, while many major sporting events have been cancelled due to the virus.
Mr Campbell told Sky News it was unbelievable the Grand Prix was going to be held in Melbourne next week given the highly contagious nature of the disease.
“The longer we allow public events to take place, on large scale, the greater the chance that there is going to be a large outbreak,” he said.
“People need to get their head around the fact nobody has an immunity to this disease”.
He said “at this point we need to be putting things in place that are going to prevent out health system getting overwhelmed”.
“A stimulus package is essentially a conventional weapon when demand drops, but you cannot stimulate an economy which is essentially in quarantine”.
