ASIO revealed this week foreign interference was at an all-time high, with more overseas agents operating in the country than at the height of the Cold War.
Mr Wilkie told Sky News “our competitors and our adversaries have access to a much broader range of technology” and “it is so much easier to reach into Australia electronically”.
He said “it is fair enough that we focus on China in this regard because they are a competitor in any number of ways”.
The “challenge” for the government now is to “manage our economic partnership with China with our historic and strategic partnership with the US” he said.
