Using a template to fabricate bespoke steel brackets

Using a template to fabricate bespoke steel brackets In this episode I am making a pair of heavy steel brackets. I had to make a template on-site and brought it back to the workshop to the brackets and I thought I would show you the process. The template is focused on the inside edge which is critical as it has to curve around an existing structure and make use of some existing bolt holes. So, the template shows the position of these bolt holes, the position of a gap to accommodate a surface feature and the actual lengths of the bracket components. The brackets are made up of three pieces, each one lying at an angle to the other. The key points were that the template is the point of truth, but you also need a drawing to give you an impression of what you are aiming for, the position and diameter of the holes that you need to drill and probably the most important bit the half angles that you need to set the saw at to make the angle cuts.
